London to Canterbury Route Announced

June 6, 2022

Just as there are many roads to Rome, there are multiple ways from London to Canterbury. The CPR has devised a foot-friendly route which gets over the challenge of walking through the suburbs of southeast London and follows where possible existing and well way-marked green paths. The CPR route takes the River Thames Path east to Greenwich and then weaves inland on the Green Chain Walk to return for a brief spell to the Thames Path before striking south by the River Darent to Dartford. From there it continues south along the Darenth Valley Walk to Otford and the Kentish hills where it turns east to cross the River Medway and follow the North Downs Way and the ancient Pilgrim Way through Kent arriving in Canterbury by the Stour Valley Way.

CPR Trustees and veteran long-distance walkers, Carlo Laurenzi and Brian Mooney, helped devise the route and they have both tested it on the ground – in some sections several times. We welcome your feedback once you’ve walked part or all of what we are calling the Francigena Britannica.
