Pilgrims walking on the Via Francigena

Testimonium

The Testimonium Peregrinationis ad Limina Petri

This is the certificate (similar to the Compostela) issued to those who have walked the final 100km (opinions differ whether this is 140km from Acquapendente, 100km Montefiascone – where signs abound saying ‘100km ad limina Petri ‘– or Viterbo), or cycled 200km.  In reality your credential is unlikely to be scrutinised with attention.

Where to obtain the Testimonium –

The process of obtaining the Testimonium has improved significantly in the past few years. Pilgrims are now welcomed directly at St. Peter’s Basilica and are able to skip the long lines.

The reception point for the Basilica is located in St. Peter’s square, beyond the State Police checkpoints, in the area to the right and in front of the stairs leading to the Portico of the Basilica. When you arrive at the reception point, show the staff on duty your pilgrim credential. After a security check by the Italian Police, follow the route indicated by the signs. The pilgrim reception point is located inside the cloakroom of the Basilica beyond the stained glass window. The staff of the pilgrim reception point will issue you with a Testimonium and you may also check your backpack here in order to access both the Basilica and the Sacred Vatican Grottoes (open from 9-5.45).

Reception point opening times:

  • every day from 7.30am to 6.30pm except Wednesdays, 1pm to 6.30pm.
